Deniece Cornejo no show at NBI probe

MANILA, Philippines—The woman who accused TV host-actor Vhong Navarro of attempted rape was a no-show at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

NBI-National Capital Region (NCR) assistant regional director Vicente de Guzman said they have sent a subpoena to Deniece Milet Cornejo to answer questions regarding the incident involving Navarro but she failed to appear Monday.

De Guzman said the actor mentioned Cornejo as the one who occupying the condominium unit where he was mauled by six to seven men.

De Guzman said failure to appear would mean “they would lose their chance to air their side in our investigation.”

He said they will file the case based on the evidence they have at hand.

The NBI already summoned the security guard on duty at the time of the incident and asked for a copy of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of Forbeswood Heights, the condominium unit.

De Guzman, however, refused to identify who will be included in the complaint saying they are still investigating the matter.

“We are already winding up our investigation,” he said.

The comedian has been confined at an undisclosed hospital since Thursday to recover from injuries that he suffered from the mauling incident on Wednesday night at Cornejo’s unit.

Navarro also admitted that he signed an entry dated Jan. 22 in a police blotter in which he was accused of raping 22-yeard-old Cornejo in her condo. He pointed out, however, that he only did so under duress.

Meanwhile, a source from the NBI said the testimony of Navarro is “consistent” with the CCTV footage inside the condominium and the testimony of the security guard Lero Garvin.

Garvin said he saw Navarro, wearing a blue t-shirt, shorts and a ball cap, emerging from the elevator, with his hands tied with a duct tape behind his back, on January 22.

The security guard also noticed at least 7 men and Cornejo surrounding the actor as they exited the building.

The NBI learned from Garvin that Cornejo was a new tenant at the condominium unit in Forbes Wood Heights and was renting a unit owned by a certain Soledad Ramos.

Meanwhile, the CCTV footage obtained by the NBI also showed a hand-tied Navarro, together with the suspects going inside the elevator.

Deniece Millet Cornejo: Woman Who Accused Vhong Navarro of Attempted Rape

Deniece Millet Cornejo has been named as the 22-year-old student who accused Vhong Navarro of attempted rape.

The highly controversial situation ended in Navarro being beaten and needing surgery while recovering in the hospital.

Cornejo said in a police report that she fought off unwanted sexual advances from the “It’s Showtime” host. According to the report, two of her friends somehow heard the struggle and made a so-called “citizen’s arrest” of Navarro, taking him down to the police station.

But Navarro says that he was held at gunpoint after he arrived at Cornejo’s condo in Fort Bonifacio, and threatened. He said he was made to admit to trying to rape the young student in a video recording. The men who threatened him and his family then said that if he paid them an undisclosed amount of money, the video wouldn’t be released to the media.

Navarro never paid the money so the video was leaked.

Now there are two sides to the story with Cornejo and her friends alleging that Navarro attempted sexual assault while Navarro says that he feared for the lives of himself and his family under threats.

Cornejo has been identified by Filipino blogs and media outlets as a model and part-time television actress.

The broadcaster GMA released a statement denying any link between Cornejo and the network’s chairman.

“This is to clarify that the complainant involved in the Vhong Navarro incident is not related to GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon,” it said.

However, Cornejo’s Facebook says that she is the grand niece of Gozon.

Cornejo said via Facebook that “Everyone wants nothing but honesty yet caught lying most of the time. truth hurts and no matter how painful it is, face it with dignity.”

A source told the Philippine Inquirer that Navarro said that Cornejo was forced to make up the complaint by her boyfriend, who was mad that Cornejo and Navarro were (allegedly) having a relationship.

Mauled Vhong Navarro to hit back at ‘thugs’

MANILA, Philippines—His nose broken and eyes swollen shut, comedian and TV host Vhong Navarro is set to file criminal charges against the group of men who gave him a severe beating Wednesday night at a condominium unit at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, according to his talent manager Chito Roño.

Until then, the ABS-CBN star would be under observation at an undisclosed hospital, where doctors would wait for the swelling to subside before deciding on any operation, Roño told the Inquirer on Saturday.
The actor’s eyes were still swollen and the attack also left him with a nasal fracture. “We will confirm (subsequent medical findings) and other side effects in a couple of days,” he stressed.

He said Navarro’s legal team was preparing to take action against the group, who remained unidentified and whose motives remained unclear.

A report on the GMA website on Saturday said a complaint for “attempted rape” was filed by a woman against Navarro in the blotter of the Southern Police District office in BGC on the night of the mauling.

The alleged attempt was foiled when two friends of the woman came to her rescue, according to the report.

But the blotter entry also indicated that the woman decided not to press charges against the celebrity, it added.

Roño earlier disclosed that Navarro went to the condo unit upon the invitation of a female friend.

“For reasons still unknown, he was blindfolded, tied up and beaten by a group of men,” Roño said. The men also issued further threats before leaving him and tried to extort money from Navarro.

‘Inhuman treatment’

“Justice must be given to Vhong Navarro for the inhuman treatment he received from thugs,” Roño said in a statement. But he declined to give additional details on the incident, citing security concerns.

Roño said the 37-year-old Navarro would take an indefinite leave of absence from the ABS-CBN noontime program “It’s Showtime,” where he is seen on weekdays and Saturdays.

Navarro has been a talent of the Kapamilya network for 15 years. He joined show business as part of the dance group Streetboys, but became popular when he took on the role of Rico Suave, the ultimate ladies man, in the Joyce Bernal comedy “Mr. Suave” in 2003.

He also tackled superhero characters like “Gagamboy” (2004) and “Lastikman” (2007), as well as the sleek secret agent King Agila in “Agent X44” (2007).

Navarro’s marriage to former actress Bianca Lapus was annulled in 2008. They have a teenage son named Isaiah.

He also has a son named Fredriek with a former girlfriend outside show business.
